Unlocked is a South Korean movie released on Netflix on February 17, 2023. The movie is directed and written by Kim Tae-Joon. Unlocked is based on the 2017 Japanese novel “Sumaho o Otoshita dake” by Akira Shiga. The film Unlocked depicts social issues and crimes, and has themes such as mystery, thriller, gore, and violence. The movie stars Chun Woo-hee and Im Si-wan as the lead actors and has a run time of 1 hour and 57 minutes.

Unlocked tells us the story of a woman called Na Mi. She is drunk one day and loses her phone on the bus. A man called Jun Yeong picks up her phone and informs Na Mi about the incident the next day. After this encounter, a series of horrific incidents follow Na Mi both in her personal life and in her professional life. It is later revealed that these things that are happening to her are because of a phone hack.

Along with this plot line, we are also shown a subplot where police officers are on the search for a serial killer who has been killing ladies and disposing of their dead bodies in the mountains. While Na Mi is searching for the hacker and the police are searching for the killer, the killer has both parties at his fingertips.

One thing that wasn’t portrayed well in my opinion was the fact that the movie focuses more on the importance of the storyline and doesn’t focus much on the characters. Due to this, the connection between characters was lost. The supporting characters also were just used for the main characters sake, without being given a proper storyline.

If you can get past this part of the movie, Unlocked never gets boring and will keep you entertained for two hours. Unlocked gives us a clever twist towards the end. The film Unlocked focuses on several social issues and opens our eyes to a few things. One being that phones are taking over our lives and our time, but there isn’t much we can do as our technological world is evolving at a fast-pace. This also reveals that our devices hold so much important information about our lives.

Unlocked shows us the possible things that could go wrong if our devices, filled with all our information, were misplaced and put in the wrong hands. Unlocked also brings awareness to crime such as hacking and stalking. Since the use of technology has increased, cyber criminals have used this to their advantage to commit their crimes from their home and anonymously leading to an unprecedented growth in technological crimes.

Overall, I like the movie Unlocked and would recommend it to someone who likes mystery, thriller, drama,
