The 1937 version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is the first-ever Disney princess movie to be released by Walt Disney, and it was loved by millions. While It’s remembered as a classic and magical princess movie, it’s definitely a movie that would scare little kids. Despite its fairytale moments, this film has aspects that are creepy and unsettling for younger audiences.
This story follows a girl who lost her mother when she was a child, and later on her dad got married to another woman, the evil queen, who is obsessed with being the “fairest of them all.” When Snow White is a teenager—she’s only 14 in the movie—the evil queen acquires a magic mirror that can talk. The evil queen asks the mirror, “Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of all?” and the mirror replies, “Snow White my queen,” and that caused all of the hate the evil queen had for Snow White to worsen. So because of that, she sends the huntsman to lure Snow White into the woods, kill her, and bring her heart back in a chest. However, the huntsman instead warns her and gives her time to run away.
This part of the film where she runs away to the forest is the more disturbing aspect of the film. Snow White finds shelter in a cottage with seven dwarves and helps with housework. One day, an old woman visits while Snow White is baking and offers her a magical apple. Snow White accepts it, wishing for a prince to take her to his castle. She takes a bite, is poisoned, and falls into an eternal sleep—until a prince wakes her.
This film teaches us to not blindly trust strangers no matter how kind and genuine they may seem. While it does display its share of magical moments and cheerful music, it also delivers an important and valuable lesson about the dangers of blindly trusting people.
In the end, Snow White is a film about innocence, kindness, and dishonesty. Snow White is a genuinely good and kind girl whose trust was betrayed for simply having trust and faith in someone who she thought was a trustworthy person. Overall, this film has a lot of dark and creepy moments but as well as important lessons and teaches us to never trust strangers, ever. It reminds us that the world is a dangerous place and to look out for ourselves because there won’t always be people around to protect us.
