Most students can admit that they have used A.I to complete an assignment. If used correctly, A.I can be a great tool for your education, and provides many advantages. But did you know that using A.I. can be a threat to your college education and maybe even your high school education?
From a student perspective, A.I. is a tool that can be useful and efficient when it comes to turning in assignments. According to Brianna Slate, a senior student in Hillcrest high school, “Honestly, I feel like it’s helpful. It definitely makes things faster and easier.” For the most part, this is true. Using A.I. correctly can help reduce stress, give you access to resources, and even give immediate feedback that may not be available to students.
According to a recent survey from the Digital Education Council, 86% of students admit to using A.I. in their studies, with 54% of students admitting to using it weekly. Many students of Hillcrest Highschool claim that they use it daily, just as seen in the survey, and admit that it has helped them through their educational career.
On the other hand, A.I. is also a threat to education and if not used properly can have negative consequences and damage your grades. If you use only A.I. to pass all your assignments, you will not learn anything. It is almost the same as having someone else come to school and do work for you. Learning the concepts yourself is important to pass upcoming tests, and get good grades. Relying on A.I. to complete written assignments also counts as plagiarism which is a serious offense and can get you removed from a school depending on policy. Lastly, Using A.I. is very unpredictable.
Tshilidzi Marwala, A Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) states that “It is crucial to acknowledge that AI is not a high precision technology” and this is entirely true. According to Giovanni Rhodes, a Hillcrest High school senior, “Using A.I. can be inaccurate. I almost failed an assignment because of it, so I use it more carefully now.” Because A.I. is a pretty new form of technology, it may give you the wrong answers so complete reliance on it can be risky for your grade.
Overall, using A.I. has its pros and cons with student and teacher opinions differing depending on age group and school location. A.I. can be a useful and interesting tool that should be used by students and teachers only as an aid, not as a substitute for hard work. A.I. can also be dangerous and damaging to a student’s education and can contribute to plagiarism, or false answers.
