Slideshow: AP Literature Students reveal themes of The Awakening

Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature & Composition students at Hillcrest High School recently experimented with integrating text and imagery while studying Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening.

Mr. Gregory Fitch’s AP English Literature students chose a single page from Chopin’s novel to deconstruct into a piece of graphic art. Students made connections to core themes, symbols, and motifs from The Awakening and attempted to bring those core ideas alive visually.

Mr Fitch said, “I was inspired originally to incorporate art into the discussion of literature and discovered students creating art inspired by Tom Phillips’ Humament. I happily brought the concept into my classroom, first with Ellison’s Invisible Man and now with The Awakening, and I was impressed by what my students uncovered in the lines of text.”
