Key Club Brings Mardi Gras to the Community

Key Club Brings Mardi Gras to the Community

I’m currently enrolled in a club through the school called Key Club. It’s basically volunteering/community service – giving up some of your time to give back to the community which is something I always loved to do and seeing the smile on everyone’s face makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Key Club is fun and enjoyable; I think every kid at Hillcrest should be a part of Key Club for at least 1 year during your high school years. It doesn’t feel like community service or anything bad. It’s actually a really enjoyable club to be part of.

One field trip I would like to highlight is when we went to a nursing home to spend and care for the elderly seniors attending the center at that time. We started off by greeting ourselves to everyone and sitting with anyone that came in. Lots of them were really happy and shared their memories about their life, kids they had, amazing trips they’ve been on, and the amazing beautiful grandkids they were blessed with and how they loved and missed their families so much.

The first activity we did when we first arrived there was getting to know each other, kind of like ice breakers, then we started a little fun activity where we could all express our creativity and we started making masks, inspired by Mardi Gras, we added feather, glitter, gems and jewels.

It was really fun and the lady I was helping really enjoyed her time and was asking questions about our school life and things we do in this day and era. It was a really nice thing to talk about and to hear about the differences between her generation and mine. We also did another activity. I feel lots of the people there including all the people that attend Key Club all enjoyed and that was bingo. Everyone got hyper and loved every single round we played, the winner at the nursing home also got another good surprise they got to enjoy, every winner got to get a treat, like cookies, cake, money.

After bingo we had a little talk and said our farewells and said goodbye. If you made it to the end of a little newspaper article I wrote I would definitely recommend that at least one time in your life you go out and help your community or help somebody that is in need of help.
