Hillcrest Students Serve Community at Chicago Food Depository
April 10, 2017
On Tuesday, April 4th, Hillcrest’s Interact Club, Sophomore Leadership, and SOAR groups partnered to perform volunteer work at the Chicago Food Depository. The Chicago Food Depository distributes over 160,000 meals every day and has a network of over 700 agencies and programs, including pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.
Hillcrest students were given the task of repacking black beans and a goal of packing, weighing, and labeling at least 1,000 bags. Each student was assigned a specific job in the process. Students were able to see the manufacturing process in action and gained an understanding of how each task integral to achieving the overall goal. Not only did the Hillcrest Hawks meet their goal but also they repacked a total of 1,414 bags of black beans, exceeding the goal by 414 bags!
With intense focus the HAWKS swooped down swiftly and powerfully using teamwork to achieve the goal. IT’S GOOD TO BE A HAWK!!!
Students enjoyed the volunteer experience and were very proud of themselves for their contribution to helping feed the hungry. It was a valuable experience for all.
