Key Club Adventures: April Food Day

Key+Club+Adventures%3A+April+Food+Day

On April 25,2024 the Hillcrest High School Key Club took a trip to the Tinley Park Convention Center and helped out with April Food Day.

April Food Day is United Way’s annual food collection event and awards luncheon that addresses this need. Through donations of non-perishable food items, household goods, and financial support, YOU can help make this possible for individuals and families in the Southland.

It was my first year going and I was really excited but also nervous because I heard it was a big event and that there was going to be a lot of work to do. When we got there we were given shirts and name tags and served breakfast before we started our volunteer work.

We sorted through bags and boxes of food and put them on organized tables. We then took those items, put them in boxes and put them in groups for schools like Governors State, Recreational Churches, and others.

After a few hours of sorting we then were given a sponsored lunch of Beggars Pizza, A. Fusion Restaurant, and Nothing Bundt Cakes. We were then thanked for our hard work as they were getting started to head back out there. Our time was up but we had made a big impact on clearing the majority of the boxes and all of the boxes they had for us.

After leaving April Food Day we then went to the park to have some fun. For Freshman, Sophomore, and  Juniors this was seen as a fun time and a class to miss at school but for me and my senior friends it was seen as the last time we get to be kids again before going out on our own and being adults.

I really enjoyed my time helping with April Food Day and will definitely do it again if I’m in the area again around that time. I’m grateful for Ms. Trench taking me to help out for this day.
