In a 2024 Pew Research survey, nearly two-thirds of teens say TikTok influences what they buy, and nowhere is that more obvious than on Valentine’s Day. In high school, February 14th isn’t just a holiday, it’s a full-on event. Hallways fill with balloons, Instagram stories loop the same love songs, and couples suddenly become very public. For singles, the day can feel overwhelming, but for those in relationships, one big question takes over the stage: “What do I get them?”
Luckily, TikTok has become the unofficial Valentine’s Day guide, offering gift ideas that help teens like me show effort without being awkward or over-the-top.
One thing that TikTok creators make very clear every February is that girls value thoughtful, personal gifts more than expensive ones. One of the most popular trends is a Valentine’s Day basket. These baskets often include favorite snacks, chocolates, lip gloss, skincare minis, small perfumes, and sometimes a stuffed animal, most of which can be found at stores like Walmart or Dollar Tree.
Another TikTok-approved classic is the handwritten letter. Writing about inside jokes, favorite memories, or reasons you appreciate someone can turn a simple gift into something unforgettable. Many creators also suggest adding a Polaroid or photo strip to match the popular “scrapbook aesthetic,” making nostalgic moments with creativity.
While girls often receive the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, TikTok has revealed something important, boys care about Valentine’s gifts too. Many viral Tiktokers such as @zarkticut are debunking the stereotype that they don’t mind being left out.
These baskets often include candy, snacks, energy drinks, cologne, gaming gift cards, socks, or hats. The key is choosing items he genuinely likes. One creator, Priscilla (@Priscillas_matcha) summed it up simply: “I feel like Valentine’s Day is less of like getting someone expensive gifts and big gifts and more of just like the sentimental value behind the gift.”
One of TikTok’s most talked-about gifts is the “Kiss Hoodie.” (A kiss hoodie is a printed out initial with kisses all over it. While kissing a hoodie for hours may sound dramatic, the final result, and reaction, is definitely worth it. Giving someone a hoodie that smells like you has become a certified relationship win.
Other popular options include personalized keychains, bracelets, or matching items. These gifts are subtle but meaningful, making them perfect for high school relationships.
For those dating someone who loves sports or gaming, TikTok DIY creators like @the_brelashe recommend leaning into those interests. Jerseys, team hats, controller accessories, and even hat bouquets all make appearances. As TikTok creators often remind viewers, “It’s not about the size of the gift, it’s about feeling appreciated.”
In this day in age, Tik Tok trends also normalizes the idea that Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to revolve around couples. Many creators promote Self-Valentine’s Day, encouraging singles to buy themselves candy, flowers, or plan Galentine’s hangouts with friends. These videos reinforce the idea that celebrating yourself is just as valid, and just as fun.
At its core, TikTok trends and creators emphasizes that Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be perfect or expensive. High school relationships are about shared memories, inside jokes, walking through school together, and posting a cute, but not overly cringey, photo. Even the simplest gift can feel special when it comes from the heart.
As I always say “If it’s genuine, it’s enough.” And in a world of trends, likes, and pressure, that might be the most important Valentine’s lesson of all.
