Grown-ish is an American sitcom spinoff of the ABC series, Black-ish. The show centers on the Johnson’s eldest daughter, Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi), as she heads off the college. She learns more about herself, and finds a loyal group of friends: Aaron (Trevor Jackson), Ana (Francia Raisa), Nomi (Emily Arlook), Vivek (Jordan Bunat), Jazlyn, Skylar (Chloex Halle), and Luka (Luka Sabbat), to help her get through the college life. She is pushed into the life as an adult, and tries to find her way on her own. Zoey feels confident that her parents have prepared her to go out on her own, but she knows she is going to have to do some growing by herself as well. The show’s main idea is to broadcast that state where a child becomes an adult, but has not yet mastered facing the world on their own yet.

The show premiered on January 3, 2018 on Freeform. It was created by Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore. It was executively produced by Anthony Anderson, Brian Dobbins, and Helen Sugland. It was distributed by Disney-ABC and Domestic television. The show has
received mainly positive reviews. Grown-ish attracted the highest rating for a comedy debut on Freeform with 1.56 million viewers.IMDb rated it a 6.4/10. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 91%. It received a 4.7/5 from Facebook. It also received a 71% from Metacritic. Ken Tucker from
Yahoo! TV states, “The effect is nicely confiding rather than jarring. Funny and sometimes surprisingly dramatic, Grown-ish feels both like a hit and like an artistic success.” Joi Childs from Black Girl Nerds stated, “It’s truly the flaws of the characters that make the show worthwhile.”

I loved this show from the beginning. With me getting ready to graduate from high school and start college in the fall, I got an insight on the college life from a college student’s standpoint. I like how the show was a spin off from Black-ish, because it had a stronger foundation to set a story line. We as viewers, already knew Zoey’s personality and how she was raised from watching the parent show. That helped us know where her mind was at and what was important to her. She gained a unique group of friends that she would’ve never been friends with on the outside world. This showed that people can change and adapt to different people. Zoey shows that you may be accustomed to what you were raised with, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be open.

Grown-ish was renewed for a second season on January 18, 2018. The second season will have 20 episodes and is rumored to premiere 4 nights a week, but that has not been confirmed. They second season will most likely follow Zoey Johnson as she continues to find her way through college and over comes all of the its troubles and tribulations.
