“Diversity may be the hardest thing for a society to live with, and perhaps the most dangerous thing for a society to be without.” said William Sloane Coffin Jr.. America was built on the backs of immigrants. Currently, there is this big issue of why illegal immigrants should leave. America is suppose to be the land of the free and the home of the brave, so why wouldn’t people want to live here? People come to escape the harsh reality of where they live. But what would happen if all illegal immigrants left ? Well the economy would decrease harshly, and the supply of workers would shrink dramatically. Immigrants contribute so much to this country and isn’t even remotely recognized for it.

Before calling for immigrants to go back home, you should think about what they contribute to the economy. “Undocumented workers contributed $13 billion in payroll taxes to old age, survivor and disability insurance in 2010, a Social Security Administration study from 2013 found”. So what exactly would happen if they left the country? A $12 billion contribution wouldn’t exist. That means that the Social Security Fund would take a huge hit. As “undocumented workers have contributed close to 10% ($300 billion) of the Social Security Trust Fund”. That’s extremely a lot of money they contribute, and what’s the thanks they get? A study found that Illegal immigrants pay $11.8 billion in taxes. “Vastly more Americans benefit from the contributions that immigrants make to our economy, including the lower consumer prices…From the perspective of National Milk Producers Federation in 2009, retail prices of milk would increase by 61 percent of its immigrant labor force were to be eliminated.” If milk would increase up to 60% then just think about what would happen to all the other products.

Also immigrants make up a huge part of the work force. Agricultural labor economist James S. Colt stated “ The reality, however, is that if we deported a substantial number of undocumented farm workers, there would be a tremendous work shortage.” It was estimated that if we took all the undocumented workers out, that it would 8.1 million workers from the American labor force. Who exactly would fill the jobs? “Baby Boomers will leave 58.6 million job openings in the next two decades. Because the native-born population will not be enough to fill the number of jobs left by Baby Boomers, the immigrant population will be directly necessary to replenishing the 7.3 million workers still needed in the workforce”.

Immigrants just don’t come to America to just be here or to suck the economy dry, they come for the american dream. “Reducing the undocumented immigrant population by 50 percent through border control or deportation would boost the native unemployment rate for unskilled workers by about 1.13 percent of its initial value”. Immigrants contribute so much to this great country. The blood, sweat, and sacrifices each ethnicity and race put into making this country what it is now is tremendous.

Every single person living in America has an ancestor that was an immigrant except for Native Americans. Some say that immigrants are criminals and make the country worse, but there is no proof of that. Without immigrants who knows how this country would turn out, but probably a disaster. The economy is better because of immigrants. They give so much to the country that only wants them to leave. People are constantly saying that they are sucking the economy dry, but it’s the complete opposite. The work force would most likely be a complete disaster without immigrants.
